Capt. Andrew P. Ross, aka “Drew”, a Special Forces detachment commander, assigned to 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne).  He died November 27, 2018, of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated while conducting combat operations in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan while serving with Special Forces in support of Operation Freedom Sentinel. He was 29 years old and had more than seven years of service in the Army. This was his second overseas tour.

Drew was born and raised in Lexington, VA. He was well known for his infectious smile, his love of dogs, a playful sense of humor, talented woodworking abilities and his ever-present passion for fitness. He loved playing sports, mostly soccer and strength training. He enjoyed the competition and camaraderie of CrossFit. He loved how CrossFit pushed him to the limits his body could endure. He graduated from Rockbridge County High School in 2007 and the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2011, at which time he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.

Drew is survived by his wife, Felicia, his mother, Beth Gerschick of Richmond, VA, his father, Stephen Ross of Richmond, VA., and his sister, Sarah Ross Geisen, of Stafford, VA.  Not only was Drew a devoted husband, he was a true family man in every sense. He was a phenomenal son, brother, and most of all, Uncle. His family was never limited to bloodline and he cultivated strong and long-lasting relationships with those around him.

Ross’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal (2nd award), Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Combat Action Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, and Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.
